Research shows that crossbred female cattle, compared to purebred females, exhibit increased productivity, specifically an average of one additional calf and over 600 more pounds of weaning weight over their lifetime, according to UT Beef & Forage Center. This advantage is primarily attributed to heterosis, or hybrid vigor, a phenomenon where crossbred offspring outperform the average of their parent breeds. Gelbvieh is frequently crossed with Angus to combine their growth and muscling with Angus carcass qualities. 

Why Gelbvieh?

Maternal Superiority: Gelbvieh cows excel in maternal traits, including fertility, strong mothering instincts, good udders, and ample milk production. They exhibit high weaning weights per cow exposed to breeding.

Reduced Mature Cow Size and Calving Ease: Compared to some other continental breeds, Gelbvieh females have a smaller mature cow size and are known for calving ease, leading to less difficulty at birth.

Carcass Quality and Yield: Gelbvieh carcasses average lower yield grades and a high percentage of Prime and Choice grades. They also have a good dressing percentage.
